TODAY'S DEVOTIONAL

“HE IS FAITHFUL TO FORGIVE…”

Monday, 27 January 2020

1 John 1 : 1-10

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” -1 John 1:9

“God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5)- the declaration that tells us that He has nothing to do with the dark world of sin. Sin is what separated man from God and unless we deal with Sin, it is impossible for man to connect with God. There is no one without sin and without the need of a Saviour—hence God’s provision in the blood of His Son that cleanses us from all sin!

Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” From the Fall in Genesis 3, the seed of sinfulness continues in each generation such that man is born in sin. However, some still deny having sin in them.  This creates a problem, because it means that either we are wrong, or God has lied. We know that God does not lie. Unless the light, the truth of God’s Word exposes our wretched condition, to deliver us from every area of darkness in our lives, we will continue to be blinded in our sinful condition.

When a person comes to the light, seeing sin for what it is, it leads him to repentance. Confession is the character of a person who walks in the light. We should never rationalize, minimize or hide sin in our lives but instead confess it, for God’s forgiveness and cleansing.  Thus the call today is for an examination of our lives, confession of sin to God, seeking forgiveness and help to turn from it.  Colossians 1:13-14:  “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” We are called to keep short accounts with God and with people.

Being a true disciple of Christ and growing into His likeness is just impossible to accomplish apart from the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. God wants us to be honest with Him and living in constant dependency on him.  The Christian life can neither be lived without faith nor by denying sinfulness in our lives.

We tend to think that the longer we are Christians, the holier we become and feel. Not so!  Spiritual growth happens not with a feeling of holiness but a readiness to acknowledge before God when we sin and quickly seek His forgiveness. It means that as we step more and more into God's light, the dark corners of our soul get exposed. It is being honest with God and confessing those dark areas of sin in our lives. To confess is to agree with the Holy Spirit about the sin as God sees it—a time of genuine acknowledgment of the sin in one’s life, mourning over it with a deep sense of regret for having wronged God. When we genuinely confess our sin, we experience God’s forgiveness and cleansing by the blood of Christ.  I John 1:7 says “The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin." There can be no greater comfort in our lives than the knowledge that we can gain forgiveness for all that is wrong in us through the precious blood of Jesus Christ, slain on the cross for the sins of all mankind.

This time of confession should be a meaningful communion with God which is to be taken seriously, not something to rush over. Spend time with God asking Him to give you His perspective with which you can view your own life.  And when you see those dark spots, bring them to His light because He is faithful to forgive and cleanse you!

Promise:

“Come now, let us settle the matter," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” (Isaiah 1:18)
