TODAY'S DEVOTIONAL

A WILLFUL SURRENDER TO GOD

Wednesday, 27 March 2019

Deuteronomy 6 : 13-25

You shall fear the LORD your God and serve Him, and shall take oaths in His name. -Deu 6:13 NKJV

A very well known verse used by our Lord when He was tempted by Satan after 40days fasting. Jesus used this very verse to counter the attacks of Satan. Mat 4:10 Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND HIM ONLY YOU SHALL SERVE.' "

Jesus also quoted partly from Deu 6:16  "You shall not tempt the LORD your God ....Mat 4:7 Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'YOU SHALL NOT TEMPT THE LORD YOUR GOD.' "
Also this chapter consists of the 'Shema' which the devout Jew recite daily as a part of their devotion. The main theme underlined in this chapter is ones love and reverential fear  towards living God and how it becomes the motivational factor for all other religious actions.
" You shall fear the Lord"...A reverential fear has its origin out of love towards God, not out of any sort of compulsion. God expects us to love Him and obey His commandments as a token of our Love towards Him. So this is not a kind of emotional response; but an act of ones will. So a willful surrender is what God expects from each one of us after experiencing His love towards, us humans. He showed the way first by loving us unconditionally; even when we were sinners. 1 Jn 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. This should motivate us to respond to Him the same way so that we can enter into a love relationship with Him. This relationship makes us one in spirit with Him. 1 Co 6:17  But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. It becomes an inseparable union with our God and He rules our lives from inside of us and we obey Him in our lives. The intimacy level attained by this union is unimaginably great. It spans into every direction of our life and fulfils the destined purpose of our very lives. All Christian service is originating out of the same motive of our love and adoration to God. This is the propelling factor for our service to others.

Jas 4:7-8  Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. As we get one with God by willfully surrendering our lives to Him, He will come near to us and bless our lives. One of the blessings is that this nearness to God; drives away the tempter of our Soul-Satan. He will flee from the presence of God led life. This is what happened with Jesus when He took Word of God and used it. It was not a simple recital of the Word, but a total obedience in front of temptation. How is our obedience to God’s Word as we read today this portion? Will you take a willful surrender to obey God in your life? If yes lets prayerfully seek the Lord for His enabling grace to do so.

Prayer:

Abba Father, after understanding your love towards me,

I take a decision to obey your Word willfully.

Please grand me your grace to do so. In Jesus name.

Amen.
