TODAY'S DEVOTIONAL

THE TRUMPET – A REMINDER

Wednesday, 28 March, 2018

Leviticus 23 : 23-44

“In the seventh month on the first of the month you shall have a rest, a reminder by blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation.” - Leviticus 23:24

The Lord our God instructs His people to celebrate specific festivals at the appointed time for each of them – there were seven in all, to be celebrated at three times in a year. Each of the seven celebrations had a meaning and they were to remind the future generations about their identity and their duty towards their God. Of the seven feasts established by the Lord, one is the Feast of Trumpets (Lev.23:23-25). This is the least explained of all the feasts, however very significant, for them as well as for us today and even in the future.

The Feast of Trumpets carries a powerful message – to the sons of Israel as well as to the Church of Christ. The Lord asked them to make Trumpets for a purpose – to blow and assemble people, to call them to start their journeys, to call them to march for war, to warn them of the imminent onset of enemy and to blow during their feasts. Though the wide use of trumpets can be seen – however, God wanted them to set apart a day in a year as the Feast of Trumpets as a reminder! Thus it could be explained to their future generation on how God miraculously helped their journey and gave them victory.

Looking at Joel 2:1 “Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound the alarm in the holy mountain…… for the day of the Lord is coming, for it is at hand.” It was a call for the people to repent and turn to God before He brought His judgement. Today the Trumpet is a symbol and reminder to each believer— it reminds us of our duty to proclaim to the world about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ! Acts 17:31 – “…because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.”  And He has given the responsibility to all of us to proclaim to the entire world about His coming and the need to repent and believe in Him! (Acts 2:38 & Matt.28:20)

Jeremiah 6:17 says: “Also, I set watchmen over you, saying, ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’…” We are set as watchmen to sound the trumpet to caution the people about the coming of the Lord.

The Trumpet reminds as of the following:

  1.The freedom in the Lord

Leviticus 25:9,10: “You shall then sound a ram’s horn on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the day of atonement you shall sound a horn all through your land. ….and proclaim a release through the land to all inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee year for you…” The trumpet here reminds us of our Salvation!

  2.The Day of the Lord

1 Thes.4:16: “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God…” This trumpet reminds us of Christ’s Second Coming!

  3.The people of the Lord
1 Cor.15 :52: “…for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.” The sound of the trumpet resonates our Resurrection in Christ!

  4.The Kingdom of the Lord
Rev.11:15 “Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!”  This trumpet is a remind of our Eternity in God’s Kingdom!

Today we are called to blow the Trumpet of the gospel to all the world and sound the alarm of His coming again-when He will come to judge the world with righteousness!
