Deuteronomy 10 : 1-22

"And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the LORD and His statutes which I command you today for your good?” (Deut. 10:12-13)

God’s plan of blessing the whole of humanity was based on sending His Son Jesus to this earth. For this He was preparing a Nation which was the ground Jesus could come to bless us humans. This was promised to Abraham and his descendants. The centre part of this blessing was to receive the commandments of God with a humble heart and follow the same in this fallen world. This was a great privilege that God gave to the descendants of Abraham, but they did not initially understand the significance of it and broke it even before it reached them. They made a golden calf and called it their god who brought them out of bondage in Egypt. “So, it was, as soon as he came near the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing. So, Moses’ anger became hot, and he cast the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain.” (Exodus 32:19)

Now in today’s reading we see how God in His abundant mercy gives them a second chance to receive this blessing. Our depraved nature is inadequate to receive the benevolence of God because it sounds alien to us. Only when God prepares the ground and makes us the vessel He wants, then only can He fill us with His blessings.

As soon as the law was given the real stuff came out of their life- they worshiped idols instead of true living God. This incident typically shows how God works in our lives. He brings in light of the Gospel that dispels darkness in our lives. As soon as this light enters one’s soul it will start removing all the darkness from our lives. This is a process that God does in the lives of all chosen ones. He will not share His divine blessings to be mixed up with earthly pagan practices.

The only way to deal with the situation is to allow the real truth to penetrate our soul and bring out everything that is detestable; then act in the same way Moses acted when he saw the golden calf. We need to deal with all the situations of sin in our life with such a holy anger. We need to destroy every root of evil, take it out of our own lives; no sympathy to be shown towards it! Here is a typical example of it.

Also, we need to declare war against such kind of a sin in our congregation. That is what the consecrated Levi tribe was asked to do. They were to kill those who were involved in this sin and had not repented even after God showed mercy and called them to separate. This will remain as a stark warning against that sin in the generations to come. This may sound harsh and out of the way but see the real picture of the cross—the Father had to send His Son to the cross to bear our sins. He died bearing our sin! So we cannot make any excuse before God in dealing with sins in our very life.

So, let us first of all eradicate all the idols and sinfulness in our life and then prepare ourselves as clean vessels to carry this heavenly blessing to the benefit of all. “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.” (2Cor.4:7)

Thought: "Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work."(2Timothy 2:21)
