Rightly in the category of the wisdom books in the Bible, Proverbs is packed with nuggets of wisdom. It says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; get wisdom!” (Prov.4:7).  In fact, Wisdom is personified in Proverbs 8&9. The first few verses of our text speaks of our Creator’s wisdom, understanding and knowledge.

In keeping sound godly wisdom and discretion, it is an advice worth examining. Along with the few verses that follow from Prov 3:22-26, we can see the intrinsic value of wisdom and the external outworking of its effect.

• life to your soul and grace to your neck

• walk safely in your way, and your foot will not stumble

• you lie down, you will not be afraid…your sleep will be sweet

• the Lord will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught

How can wisdom become life to your soul?: It is in having the One who is Wisdom from God to us- Christ Jesus! 1 Corinthians 1:30 AMP says: “But it is from Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God [revealing His plan of salvation], and righteousness [making us acceptable to God], and sanctification [making us holy and setting us apart for God], and redemption [providing our ransom from the penalty for sin]” Colossians 2:3 says, in Christ “…are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”  The first and foremost thing for one to do if he has to gain wisdom is to invite the Source of all wisdom into his/her life! His plan of salvation if accepted can make us right with God and allow His reign in our lives.

For such a person, Wisdom will grace his/her neck, being evident to all. But this will depend on your giving yourself to applying the principles of wisdom which is given in God’s Word and listening to the Great Counsellor, the Holy Spirit who leads you into all truth (John 16:13).  The godly man of Psalm 1 constantly meditates on God’s Word and he prospers in what he does- the Lord knows his way because He guides him in His way!

When Christ is Lord of one’s life, He establishes peace with God and peace with others. Philippians 4:7 says, “…the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” When His peace settles in our heart, it calms the storms of our life and peace acts as a guard from allowing worry and fear to settle in. Hence one can enjoy sweet sleep knowing his/her life is safe and secure in Christ’s hands.

Godly wisdom and discretion not only keeps one from stumbling in the way, but keeps one’s feet from being snared in the way of the evil one. Even in your confusions, when you are uncertain, as  Isaiah 30:21 NIV says: Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it." This only happens for one who constantly puts his/her trust in the Lord and seeks His way and is diligent to walk/obey in what the Lord reveals. To such, God grants discretion- the way to discern right from wrong and it keeps him/her from stumbling.

Friend, if Christ has not become your Wisdom- the invitation is still open today. Your way of life can be “wisdom- conditioned” as His reign of wisdom will pave a sure way for a successful and blessed life!

Lord Jesus, teach me to walk in Your wisdom

all the days of my life that I may be blessed in You!
